More than 41,000 root canals are performed daily in the US. What is a root canal? How do you know if you need one?
A patient may require root canal treatment if the soft tissue inside their tooth is infected or inflamed. A cracked tooth, deep cavity or injury to the tooth could be causes for pulp to be damaged or diseased. Usually, root canals are simple procedures with minimal discomfort. The goals in having a root canal are to clean the infected area so that the patient no longer feels pain, and also to save the integrity of the tooth, so that the patient can avoid having the tooth pulled.
