“Very spicy foods, such as onions and garlic, and coffee may be detected on a person’s breath for up to 72 hours after digestion. Onions, for example, are absorbed by the stomach, and the odor is then excreted through the lungs. Studies even have shown that garlic rubbed on the soles of the feet can show up on the breath.” (ADA, February 2007).

But don’t despair! Most bad breath is caused by the wastes from bacteria in the mouth, and practicing good oral hygiene removes bacteria, reducing or eliminating the problem. If you have questions about causes and cures of bad breath, ask your dentist or hygienist.

Congratulations to Janet Westphal, our Hospital Coordinator, who took 2nd place for Females in the Cinco de Mayo Half-Marathon!

Gentech Dentist sponsored their employees who took part in two races over the weekend of May 5-6th. Six employees ran in the Cinco de Mayo Run on May 6th (Sunday) in Portland, OR which benefited Candelighters for Children with Cancer and thirteen employees participated in the Walk/Run for the Animals on May 5th (Saturday) in Vancouver, WA which benefited the SW Washington Humane Society. Gentech Dentist is proud to support the employees who took part in these Vancouver and Portland area events!

In the eighties, artificial sweeteners in blue and pink packets, diet soda and sugar-free gum set the standard as “healthy” alternatives to their sugar-laden parent products. Today, there’s another sweetener called xylitol touting sweet-as-sugar taste that is low in calories, and studies show it may help reduce and prevent cavities.

A natural sweetener found in plants and fruits, xylitol was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1986 as a food additive and is now appearing in sugar-free gum, mints and toothpaste.

Research confirms that of all factors studied, xylitol most likely inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the oral bacteria that causes cavities, according to Allen Otsuka, PhD, one author of a study in the July/August 2002 issue of General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed publication of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

Gentech Team Enjoys the Shamrock Run!

A team of 36 Gentech employees and friends enjoyed the Shamrock Run on Sunday, March 18th, joining in the fun and festivities that always mark this event! A portion of the Shamrock run proceeds benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. According to shamrockrunportland.com, “The Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation provides power, potential, and promise for one of America’s leading pediatric health centers: Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
